2022 Sandalwood Sanctuary Half Marathon
Race Report Sunday 19th June 2022, Kununurra. Perfect ‘dry season’ conditions saw athletes compete in cool morning conditions in this year’s Half Marathon. First to cross the line were local brothers Seb and Dominik Pufke in the Duo category. Closely behind was first solo male, Steve Sunderland, who covered the 21.1km distance in 1 hour, 29 minutes and 18 seconds. First female solo was Cathy Harris, who made the trip across from Broome to finish in 2:08:03. There was very close competition in the Quad – 4-person team category. Local Ord farms – Ceres, Bothkamp and Acadia had all entered multiple teams, made up of many of their visiting workers from East Timor and Vanuatu. As well as racing for glory, there were ice-creams promised to the winning team. After four close laps of racing, it was the Ceres Lightning that cam home first in the Quad category. Event manager, Glenn Taylor commented “it was fantastic to see so many locals and visitors running today and great spirited rivalry between the teams was excellent”. |

2021 Sandalwood Sanctuary Half Marathon: The new off-road course for the Kununurra Half Marathon proved popular with participants. The event attracted locals and a keen group of Kalgoorlie Runners, who made the long trip to Kununurra for the run. Event highlights included the young Lapsley brothers beating home their parents duo team. It was fantastic to have two PCYC compete in the event for the first time also, with the PCYC team setting the 1 lap record (22:37) as part of their Quad team's efforts. In the solo men’s field, local Steve Sunderland took line honors in 1:37:59. In the women’s, it was Kalgoorlie runner Ayako Kusui finishing first in 1:55:55. There was very strong junior performances in the duo’s and quads. With the Pufke brothers taking line honors in the duo and the Jolly Joggers taking home the chocolates in the Quad. The off-road course showcased the link track to Lakeside and the start/finish was at the new BMX track, which was formally opened on the day. |
